Work on «How to defuse a nuclear bomb» began in late 2003. In July 2004, in Nice, France, was stolen «crude» album. In response, Bono said that if the album will appear in network, it will immediately spread through the store iTunes, and within a month he will appear on the shelves.

The first song of the album - «Vertigo» - was put on the air 22 September 2004 and became an international hit. Apple is, along with U2, has released a special edition player iPod. The model characterized the red wheel and autographs of the group, made on the back cover of the player. On iTunes has released an exclusive set of U2 entirely, which included not previously published material. Revenue has been transferred to charitable organizations.

The album was released on 22 November 2004, started as the number 1 in 32 countries, including Ireland, USA, Canada and the United Kingdom. Only in the United States in the first week it sold 840,000 copies of the album, which is about two times more than the sale of All that You Can't Leave Behind over the same time, it was a personal record of the group. In the same year, Bruce Springstin introduced U2 in 2005 in the «Hall of Fame rock n 'roll».

In March 2005, U2 Vertigo Tour began in the United States. He was in Europe and Latin America. At the concerts performed a large number of songs, including those that the public has not heard since the early 80's: The Electric Co., An Cat Dubh / Into the Heart.
